Pendulum’s 10 Year Anniversary Countdown Day 17

Day 17

Today’s featured project is Dunkin’ Donuts Park, home of the Hartford Yard Goats located in Hartford, CT.

This project has been under such scrutiny for the last three years that unless for some reason you’ve been stranded on a deserted island or hiding under a rock and missed all the happenings you should be up to date.  If not please check out the in-depth review by Joe Mock  of http://www.baseballparks.com (Joe Mock is a noted ballpark aficionado and freelance journalist for USA TODAY).  With over 7,000 words describing the ballpark we’re not sure there’s anything else we can say about it that he hasn’t…well maybe a few things but we’ll save that for cocktail hour conversations.

Pendulum’s 10 Year Anniversary Countdown Day 16

Day 16

Today’s featured project is 1512 Holmes Street located in the East Crossroads District of Kansas City, MO.  This adaptive reuse of a former transmission repair shop serves as the midwest headquarters of Pendulum.

This 5,000 SF interior accurately reflects the personality and interests of its owners who are automotive enthusiasts.  There are subtle hints of the relationship between the building’s past use and its present inspiration throughout.  The overall aesthetic of the interior revolves around a balance of raw materials with a consistent notion of refined edges.

Conference Room Transformation

Typical Workstations

Finding innovative ways to customize elements within the design for multi-purpose and flexibility was a key component of the design challenge.  Therefore the first-floor conference room table transforms into a billiards table that accommodates formal and informal hospitality.  The second-floor east lounge acts as an informal living room and presentation space, while the second-floor west lounge is reserved for formal entertainment and board meetings with a restored 1920’s Koken barber chair as the centerpiece.

The preconceived notion of how a work environment is supposed to look, feel, and function is challenged by our space.  Some believe that a business is supposed to be serious and efficient.  In this case we are a bit more eclectic, the ultimate compliment is when people see the space and ask what we actually do for a living.  “Is this an office, a bar, a billiards hall, an automotive shop, a speakeasy…do you get any work done?”  The answer is yes to all of the above…this space represents a lifestyle that fosters creativity in contrast to a “bin for stacking people”.

Interesting Fact:

1512 Holmes Street was the recipient of the 2017 IIDA Kansas City Mid America Design Awards (MADA) Silver Award for Renovation & Restoration.

Pendulum’s 10 Year Anniversary Countdown Day 14

Day 14

Today’s featured project is the Beacon Hill Homes located in Kansas City, MO.  The traditional front porch concept was raised to the second floor which maximizes views from the kitchen and open living area toward the downtown skyline.  Each home consists of three bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, half basement, and attached two car garage.

Interesting Fact:

Pendulum also designed the “Distend Home”, a single story prototype for the Make It Right Foundation that was scheduled to be built in the Mannheim Neighborhood in Kansas City, MO.

Remember that time Pendulum won the “Haute Couture” Award at IIDA Kansas City’s 2014 Color + Couture Runway Competition…

Pendulum’s John Iiams in his runway gear…they wouldn’t let us roll the motorcycle down the runway, even though we tried.

The Details Episode 02 – Color + Couture 2014 (Full Length Video)

IIDA Kansas City hosted their largest event of the year, Color + Couture 2014 where models walk the runway wearing fashions made from carpet, tile, wall coverings, and other interior materials created by local architecture and interior design firms.  Pendulum and Museo were teamed together to design a look using BuzziSpace Felt Fabric.  This video provides a behind the scenes look at our night backstage and on the runway.

 Acknowledgments:

Incorporation Day – Seven Year Anniversary!

Project Collage

When Devan and I started Pendulum the industry standard was three years before you’d be considered a real business.  As the economic downturn reared its ugly head five years was the new normal…and now we hear ten is what it takes before the industry takes you seriously.  Well, 5/18/2014 made seven years in the game and the Pendulum is still swinging.  Are we real?  I guess that depends on who you talk to, but as the resident realist I will say that it has been an honor to contribute to the built environment with the projects featured in the collage above.  In behalf of our naysayers and despite our reputation for upsetting the apple cart I suppose we’ll hold off on having any major parties until year ten, but in the meantime we’ll keep grinding, hustling, competing, growing, and broadening our horizons…the next evolution for us is right around the corner.

Many thanks to all of our families, friends, staff, clients, and collaborators for inspiring us to keep it moving.

Barcelona > Bologna > Rome > Valencia

We spent a little time recently in Europe recharging our design batteries and searching for unique culinary experiences…we also conducted a little business here and there.  We could go into great detail but let’s keep it simple: 1.) Gaudi…wow! 2.) La Boqueria (Barcelona) – yes, some things are still crawling…that means it’s fresh, whack it over the head and let them cook it for you…delicious 3.) Roma! Food – yes please, Architecture – amazing, Food…yep, I realize I’m being repetitive.  After the food be sure to level out with a little “Pastis” and don’t forget the water back.

After Rome we spent a little time in Bologna Italy…evidently the Ducati factory and museum closes on the weekends which was very disappointing; I know you know how much we love Ducati.  To top it all off we got into a small altercation with local pick pockets…but hey, we both came home with our wallets – enough said…no pictures.
